5 things every trades website should do (most don't)

5 min read · For UK trades businesses

Most trades websites are digital business cards: a logo, a phone number, a photo of a van, and a contact form nobody checks. It looks fine. It also does almost nothing to win you work. A website should earn its keep — here are five things yours should do, and most don't.

1. Answer the customer instantly

When someone lands on your site at 9pm with a burst pipe, a contact form that gets read "sometime tomorrow" is useless. Your site should answer common questions and capture the job on the spot, so a late-night visitor becomes a booked call instead of a lost one.

2. Let people book without phoning

A lot of customers — especially younger homeowners — would rather book online than make a call. If the only way to reach you is a phone number, you're turning those people away. A simple "book a visit" button that drops the job straight into your diary wins work you never even knew you were missing.

3. Show the work, not just the logo

Trades sell on trust. Before-and-after photos, the areas you cover, a few real reviews — that's what turns a stranger into a customer. A wall of stock images does the opposite.

The best trades website isn't the prettiest. It's the one that answers, books, and follows up — so no enquiry goes cold.

4. Chase the quote for you

You send a quote, hear nothing, and never chase it — because you're busy actually doing the work. That quote is often a job you've already half-won, lost to silence. Your site should follow up automatically a couple of days later: a friendly nudge that turns "I'll think about it" into "when can you start?"

5. Get you found on Google

If you don't show up when someone searches "electrician near me," none of the above matters. A proper website, set up correctly with your Google listing, is what puts you in front of people at the exact moment they need you.

Here's the honest bit: most trades know their website should do these things. They just don't have the time to build it. That's the job we do for you — and we guarantee it's live within 10 working days.
